Vacuum Cleaner Acoustics

You won't play any tunes using Vacuum Cleaner Acoustics

I imagine that what you want to know is something about the sound of a vacuum. Acoustics is actually the study of sound and vacuums make a lot of different sounds.

Here's a review of the noises made by the typical vacuum:

1. Suction sound. This is an easy one but very important. No suction= no dirt pick-up.

2. Motor Noise. Vacuums are built around a small electric motor that spins various parts that generate the suction that picks up the dirt. Higher quality vacuum cleaners are built with better motors that allow for cooler operation thereby running quieter.

3. Dirt noises running through the hose or upright vacuum cleaner itself. This is another good thing, though once again, higher quality parts in better quality vacuums means less noise from the dirt being picked up.

4. Beater Bar Brush. Most uprights and many canister type vacuum cleaners use a powered brush to "beat up" the carpet pile and release dirt. This is another good acoustical sound.

5. Finally, there are the squeaks and "tinny" sound of many vacuum cleaners due to the selection of construction materials. A good example of this is all plastic body units that tend to rub against each other causing squeaking. Although it doesn't affect the operation of the vacuum, it can be annoying.

Any vacuum cleaner consumer rating system may set up a test for a given scenario but it won't be true to life. So even the most scientific measurements are based on a set of parameters that were created to be measured. This means that the inforamtion can compare the same amoung various vacuums but the test isn't a true to life experience.

So what type of vacuum is the quietest or which one would be rated quieter?

Hands down, the absolute quietest vacuum cleaner type in operation is the whole house vacuum cleaner system. This is because the motor is located remotely in an unoccupied or little used part of the house. So the only sounds you get are dirt being picked up by suction and if used, the whirr of beater bar attachment.

The second quietest vacuum cleaner is the one with the longest hose. The farther away you are from the motor, the less noisy and annoying the sounds. Of course, this also means a better quality vacuum because you need the extra suction and motor capacity to effectively clean using a long hose.

From the standpoint of noise between a canister vacuum or an upright vacuum cleaner, it's really a toss up based on all the requirements and expectations you have when selecting a unit. The upright tends to have better dirt pick up power but is heavier to move about. The canister is usually more convenient to use but has more pieces to get out before using then store back away.

All vacuum cleaners however are not alike when it comes to the noise levels. Although much of the vacuum cleaner acoustical noise coming from a unit are common, the "other noises" are a result of construction materials and basic quality.

The volume of the noise is also a direct result of the material selection and construction techniques. A high quality vacuum will mount the motor on shock mounts or on a metal chassis thereby lowering the vibration and noise level. Lower priced units will use plastic mounts that can actually amplify the noise.

You simply can't go wrong with a higher quality vacuum cleaner. They last longer, provide better service and are much quieter.
