Discount Vacuum Cleaner Vacuum Ratings

Discount Vacuum Cleaner Vacuum Ratings are Not Always What They Seem

Reading ratings for any type of product should always put you on the lookout for bias. See, the person who's doing the rating, review, or recommendation has their own preference for a given product style or even name brand. The biggest problem is that many reviewers simply aren't honest enough to admit that they have a bias.

As someone who has worked with statistics, numbers and customer requirements for years, my personal bias is based on the belief that no single product can satisfy every consumers needs. The idea of a discount vacuum cleaner, cheap if you will, is oftentimes dismissed by many reviewers.

Complaints such as noisy or an all plastic body are automatically considered negatives. In reality, there are many of us who simply can't afford $3-$500 dollar vacuums. There's also the benefits of these all plastic models such as being much more lightweight and maneuverable than their heavier counterparts.

So when considering vacuum ratings it's more important to understand what you need and use rating systems and reviews to better understand the features and functionality of each manufacturer's offerings.

One good example of caution when it comes to various reviews is in the area of motor size and ampere ratings. Many people would assume that vacuum cleaner ratings motors with higher amps are better. The answer to that is absolutely maybe however. Lighter weight vacuums with lower motor amp ratings may actually pick up dirt better than others with larger motors. The reasons of course are varied but may include better design and lighter weight materials. Just as a small economy car doesn't need an oversized V-8 engine, light weight and maneuverable vacuums may not need a high amp motor.

Another area of interest for many reviewers who rate vacuum cleaners is the ability to go cordless. While there's no doubt that the cordless feature makes it handy for quick pickups, they aren't a good choice for someone with a lot of vacuuming to do. The run time on the battery just isn't enough to support heavier duty use. So while there are many discounted and low cost vacuums that feature a cordless design, they simply are not a good choice for replacing a corded vac.

So once again, careful consideration of vacuum rating methods and built in bias can help you make a better selection when considering a new vacuum cleaner. A good example of this is that if the reviewer likes and prefers cordless units, they are more likely to ignore or not consider the added cost of the rechargeable batteries and the charging unit. It costs more and those batteries don't last forever.

The key to using reviews and rating systems is to understand what is being used to develop the final rating and then decide if those features or functions are truly important to you.

Remember that the best vacuum for the money is the one that meets your needs at a price you can afford. While the best vacuum cleaner may pick up better than anything else on the market, it's of no interest if you're looking for a discounted or inexpensive unit.
