Best Vacuum for the Money |
A consumer reports vacuum cleaners are Not That difficult to Figure Out If you're looking for the Consumer Reports as in the magazine site, it's http://www.consumerreports.org/. It's not the kind of place I personally use because what they think is important may not be important to me. So I tend to check out articles and sites that have actual CONSUMERS that have day to day experience with the product, in this case a vacuum cleaner and use their information as an honest guide. This doesn't mean that other people don't have their own bias for or against a certain vacuum cleaner. A real consumers report on upright vacuum cleaners from the people that actually have had experience using it. Thing is, they at least are honest enough to offer their perspective and recognize they are biased, while consumer magazine reviews and rating scales are also biased but don't admit what their biases are. In any event, if you want to good vacuum cleaner, you need to understand what GOOD means to you. A vacuum cleaner consumer reports cannot tell you what's important or necessary for a vacuum cleaner to be a good fit with your needs. Only you can do that and it's not as difficult as you might guess. Consider these couple of points and seriously drop the number of vacuum cleaners under consideration by almost 70-80% without even looking at a rating or consumer report. 1. WEIGHT. If the vacuum cleaner is for someone older who has a more difficult time getting around, weight should be a major consideration. Many of these folks tend to live in homes without a lot of traffic so ease of use should trump maximum suction and durability. If however, you have a house full of kids and they even help with the vacuuming, you need to look at suction power and durability as primary considerations. 2. Bag vs bagless. While the cyclonic or bag less designed vacuum cleaners are the new technology in the market, they are NOT needed for many people. The bag less vacuum tends to be a little more expensive and doesn't hold as much dirt before needing to be emptied. The flip side to this is that while it does need emptied more often, it maintains maximum suction throughout it's use. That is, it doesn't lose suction even when the dirt container is full. The bag vacuum cleaner will lose suction as it collects the dirt. 3. Upright vs. canister. Personal preference here. Both come in bag and bagless varieties. An upright is heavier as all the parts are on 1 platform while the canister typically needs to be set up and put together. [put together is attach the hose to the power unit and carpet brush, big deal!] Uprights tend to be easier to use when you have a second story on your home. Carrying all the pieces of a canister vac up and down the stairs can be tiresome. 4. HEPA Filtration. If you have someone who is allergic or suffers from asthma, you may want to consider a vacuum cleaner with a high quality HEPA exhaust filter system. This can eliminate the dust particles escaping from the vacuum cleaner and getting into the air only to cause problems for those with allergies or to re settle back onto furniture. So without the need to use or even consider any consumer reports or vacuum cleaner guide or rating system, you can decide these 4 important features that are critical to selecting the vacuum cleaner that's right for you and your family. Yes, it's a high level list of requirements but once you know GENERALLY what features are considered MUST-HAVE's, you can then start your shopping for the right vacuum all without the reports or rating systems of others. These 4 points can eliminate the majority of vacuum cleaners on the market and make it much easier to consider the finer features like suction, dirt capacity, color, accessories, etc.
