Computer Cleaning Tips

Computer Cleaning Tips from Someone Who knows.

If you've checked out the article on fast cleaning tips, you know some important tricks to get the dirt before it gets your stuff. One of the biggest dirt collectors in your home by far however has to be your computer.  With all the fans sucking in air for cooling, it also is a dirt collector extraordinaire.  From the monitor, dirty hands on the keyboard and all that dust, it all needs work.

The main box has a series of fans that pull air into the unit for cooling.  There usually is at least 3 fans in the box itself,
1 for the CPU
1 on the motherboard itself
1 as a whole unit fan located at the back of the box
And
Sometimes an additional fan on the video card itself.

Oh, and there's another fan built into the power supply, all pulling air and dirt into your computer.  While all this cooling is necessary, the dirt can shorten the life of your computer drastically.

Here's the list to do the job right

  1. Turn off the computer
  2. Connect all the cables taking care to markup where each of them should be returned.
  3. Take computer outside or somewhere the dirt is not going to be a problem
  4. Open one side of the computer.  You should see a lot of parts, if not, open the other side.
  5. Using a can of compressed air from the local electronics store, blow out the dirt and dust from inside the unit. Don't use an air compressor because they usually don't have moisture control to keep dampness from delicate electronic parts.
  6. Take special care to blow out all fans and housings.
  7. Do not touch anything inside the computer itself.  This means your hands, and the can of compressed air
  8. Compressed air comes with an extension module usually black or red in color.  Attach it to the can and blow out the power supply, and all around the cables and wires
  9. Do not put the extension module inside the power supply.
  10. When satisfied and the dust has settled, close your computer back up in return to its place of honor next to your desk.
  11. Now would be a good time to use a damp cloth and wipe off the outside of your computer
  12. Reinstall all cabling and verify that your computer is back up and running
  13. Organize the cables using zip ties
  14. Wipe down at CRT keyboard, mouse and speakers

Your computer is now ready for another six months of trouble-free operation. Oh, and I know because I do this every 6 months with not only my computer but my wifes system and to each of my 8 childrens system.
