Shop Vac

Shop Vac Vacuums are heavy duty dust catchers in any workshop

Reviews and other information on shop vacs seem to measure picking up power, noise levels and the like. Though there are many very good companies like Dayton, Rigid, Craftsman, and even Hoover that make shop vac vacuums, one important issue overlooked by many however is how must dust is eliminated in the air.

This isn't a big deal to many who enjoy their how workshops to build and provide a creative outlet. But consider that some types of wood, specifically pressure treated materials have been treated with chemicals that are suspected in increase cancer risks.

Add to this issue that dust has been known to be an allergy and asthma trigger and the level of dust contaminants in the workshop becomes much more important.

Dayton, Rigid and the others typically have a variety of models that offer features like microsopic dust filtering. The good news is that the shop vac or wet-dry vacuum, usually has dust catching filters that help keep the smaller dust particles under control.

How they control the dust however is a consideration as many require replacement filters that adds to the cost of ownership in the long term. Washable filters are much more cost effective.

One thing that is very important in shop vac selection is the feature of a tool-triggered shop vac. These tool triggered machines turn on and off automatically when the saw, or other machinery is in operation. This makes the use of the shop vac much more effective and potentially much more usable.

Next up, consider the size of the holding container. ok, the shop vac you're looking to own has a big holding capacity like the Rigid 12 Gallon Wet/Dry Vac. Although a good capacity, this may NOT necessarily a good thing when you consider that the machine needs to be emptied. What good is a wet-dry vac that holds 14 gallons of water, about 105 pounds by weight when you can't lift it once full? Remember that if you're going for capacity, wheels matter!

Still, everyone should have a shop vac around if only for those unforeseen emergencies. They are versatile in that they can pick up lots of larger debris that you wouldn't even consider a home vacuum to handle. Have a ton of those little LEGOs building blocks? A shop vac can make short work of the pile and not damage them.

Another good use of a home shop vac is for water emergencies. Because the shop vac vacuum doubles as a wet or dry system, it can be used in the inevitable sink, washing machine or toilet overflow.

The time to get a good quality wet-dry vacuum is before the need arises.

If you're looking for a great product for the workshop, maybe a wall mounted shop vac is the thing to get.
